Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested the former minister of a Cordova church just before 6 o’clock last evening for molesting a former church member.
The victim, a 21 year-old man, told Sheriff’s detectives that Steven Haney, 46, of Cordova, who served as pastor of Walnut Grove Baptist Church for 20 years, abused him at the church and other locations in the Memphis area from September 2001 through December 2006. Haney resigned as pastor of the church a year ago.
The victim told investigators Haney approached him when he was 15 years old and became a mentor to him. The victim said Haney eventually lured him into performing sex acts with him at the church study and other locations in the Memphis area.
Sheriff’s detectives recently began the investigation after the victim told relatives about the alleged sexual encounters with the minister. Detectives say the investigation is continuing to see if there are more victims.
Steven Haney has been charged with Sexual Battery by an Authority Figure. He is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $25,000 bond.
UPDATE: Steven Haney posted bond and has been released from jail.
