Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Resigns in Midst of Federal Investigation

Sergeant Joe Everson, a detective with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office General Investigation Bureau, has resigned his position with the Sheriff’s Office. Everson resigned late yesterday afternoon, September 6. Today, Everson met with federal prosecutors in Nashville and agreed to accept a charge that he willfully made false statements to federal investigators about a burglary that happened in July in Wilson County.

Detective Everson, has served with the Sheriff’s Office since 1988. He was relieved of duty this past July 24 after Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed him about the burglary. On July 18, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents discovered bugging devices and surveillance equipment hidden inside the Fraternal Order of Police Campground facilities in Wilson County.

Another Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy remains off the job with pay in connection with the burglary. Deputy Lewis (Dan) Chapman, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1999, was relieved of duty this past July when agents questioned him about the burglary.

A former Metro Nashville Police Department lieutenant now employed by the Teamsters Union was arrested in connection with the case. Specifics of the burglary should be directed to the Kristin Helm, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Public Affairs Officer at (615) 744-4087.
