The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a class for Reserve Deputies beginning June 4, 2007.
“We currently have about 178 Reserve Deputies. It is our goal to have 300 Reserve Deputies working with us at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
Reserve Deputies go through a 23-week training course which includes 460 hours of training. Use of firearms, physical agility, and Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures are taught during the course. Upon graduation, the deputies are assigned to various bureaus of the Sheriff’s Office mostly in the Patrol and Fugitive units.
The officers serve at least 24-hours-a-month to maintain their status as Reserve Deputies. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, at least 21-years-old and pass a thorough background check.
Those interested in becoming a Reserve Deputy should have their applications turned in to the Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division by May 1, 2007.
Applications can be mailed or picked up at the Sheriff’s Office Substation at 11670 Memphis Arlington Road in Arlington. For information, contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Reserves Division at (901) 867-1440.
