Release Date: February 8, 2007

Larry CarrShelby County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a man who may be tied to a string of forgeries at area retail stores. He was arrested after a Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy pulled the man’s car over for speeding near Millington.

Just after noon on Monday, February 4, Larry Carr, 50, of Memphis, was driving on Raleigh-Millington near Fite. Sheriff’s Deputy Ray Brenner clocked Carr’s Pontiac G6 going 62 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Initially, Carr identified himself as another person to Deputy Brenner who quickly realized Carr had given him a counterfeit Driver’s License.

After a search of Carr’s vehicle, templates for counterfeit Driver’s Licenses and several check books were found in the glove box and console. Some of the checkbooks had names printed on them, others didn’t. Detectives with the Sheriff’s A.L.E.R.T. Squad (Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team), which investigates fraud and retail theft, are researching the names printed on some of the checkbooks. Investigators believe some of the names are bogus.

At the time of the traffic stop, Carr’s vehicle was packed with $200 dollars worth of groceries which had been bought earlier in the day at a Kroger store in Atoka, Tennessee. Deputies believe Carr forged a check to buy the groceries.

A.L.E.R.T. Squad Deputies say Carr may be connected with several forgeries at area grocery stores and retail stores in Shelby County and nearby communities.

Larry Carr faces four charges, two counts of criminal simulation and two counts of forgery. There may be other charges placed against him as Sheriff’s Deputies, the Bartlett Police Department, Atoka Police Department and other agencies investigate the forgery cases.
