A man suspected of stealing laptop computers from an Arlington business was arrested this afternoon after an hour-long standoff with Deputies.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office General Investigation Bureau went to the 4300 block of Hunter’s Glen North near Raleigh about 1:30 this afternoon. Deputies wanted to question Charles Owens, 24, about the theft of the computers from Wright Medical Technology in Arlington. Company officials discovered the laptops missing June 13.
Yesterday, Sheriff’s detectives located two of the three computers at a Raleigh barbershop and arrested Jamean Baker, 24, of Memphis. Baker was charged with theft of property $500-$1000. Deputies believe Baker received the laptops from Owens.
As detectives approached Owens this afternoon in the front yard of his house, he barricaded himself inside the house.
Detective Sergeant Ray Sides called Owens on his cell phone. After about an hour, Sides convinced Owens to surrender. As a precaution, the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and members of the Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiations Unit were called to the scene since it was not known whether Owens was armed or other people were inside the house.
Owens was not armed and no one else was in the house. Owens was taken to Sheriff’s Office headquarters for questioning. Deputies say Owens will be changed with theft of property over $5,000 and could face other charges.
