Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detectives have caught up with one of two men believed to be responsible for breaking into more than 40 vehicles in Memphis and Shelby County during the past several months.
Deputies say Marcellus Mason, 25, was taken into custody about one o’clock yesterday morning in the 6300 block of Stone Park Cove in the Hickory Hill area. Sheriff’s Detectives and other Deputies with the Sheriff’s Street Crimes Unit were assisted in the arrest by the Mid-South Fugitive Task Force, which played a major role in the capture of Mason.
“We appreciate the Mid-South Fugitive Task Force offering its assistance in this case. The Sheriff’s Office works in partnership with the United States Marshal’s Service on a daily basis. This is an excellent example of what can happen when law enforcement agencies work together,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
The Mid-South Fugitive Task Force is comprised of United States Marshals, Sheriff’s Deputies and Memphis Police Officers. The task force joined with Deputies and helped in the search for Mason this past week after arrest warrants were issued for him and Brandon Hughes, 28, also of Memphis.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods Task Force, which has officers from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Memphis Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, also assisted in the arrest.
Sheriff’s Detectives believe Mason and Hughes began a crime spree this past fall which continued as late as January 5th and 6th when three vehicles were broken into at Shelby Farms.
Last month, Deputies say 30 vehicles were burglarized during the Liberty Bowl game in the area surrounding the stadium. Other vehicles were burglarized in restaurant and motel parking lots.
Last week Deputies searched Mason’s home on Bellevue and found a variety of stolen cell phones, electronic equipment and other items taken from the vehicles.
Deputies are still searching for Brandon Hughes.
Anyone with information about Brandon Hughes is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at (901) 379-7625 or Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH (2274).
