Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to several neighborhoods in East and North-East Shelby County this evening in the wake of tornadoes and damaging storms that moved through the area.
Deputies, Reserve Deputies and Volunteers with the Sheriff’s Emergency Services Bureau went door-to-door checking on residents in the Arlington and Brunswick areas in North-East Shelby County.
Storms took the roofs off of some homes in the Arlington area near Highway 385. Other homes were damaged further north in the Brunswick community, particularly in the Godwin subdivision.
“As tornadoes moved into the area about 6 p.m., our Deputies and Emergency Services Volunteers assisted the Shelby County Fire Department to look for residents who might have been hurt during the storm. They also helped with traffic control. Many roads were impassable by the heavy rain and trees that were blown down,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
Emergency Services volunteers continue their work tonight to conduct damage assessments, check for power outages and remove trees and other debris blocking the roadways.
Specific damage was noted in neighborhoods near:
- 11,000 block Macedonia at Collierville-Arlington
- 10,000 block of Godwin at Van
- Highway 385 between Paul Barrett Parkway and Stewart Road
Debris blocked roadways at:
- Godwin east of Van
- Deadfall at Moose
- Deadfall near Godwin
- Highway 64 at Airline
The Sheriff’s Office has two mobile command centers operating. Deputies are at the Sheriff’s Office Substation at 11670 Memphis-Arlington Road and at the Emergency Management Agency Operations Center in Midtown Memphis, where various agency representatives are coordinating the storm relief efforts.
