Sheriff's Office Needs Students For Citizens' Academy

Shoppers at area malls will be seeing Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office as they sign up students for the next series of classes for the Citizens' Academy which begins in March.
“This will be our fourth class. It will be an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about the various divisions of the Sheriff's Office,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
On three Saturdays in February, from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., shoppers at Southland Mall, Wolfchase Mall and Hickory Ridge Mall will be greeted by Deputies who will have application forms for the academy. Here is the schedule:
- February 5 - Southland Mall-Shelby Drive/Elvis Presley
- February 19 - Wolfchase Mall-Germantown Road/Highway 64
- February 26 - Hickory Ridge Mall-Winchester/Hickory Hill
Classes begin March 29 and end with graduation on May 24. The sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings and on a few Saturdays. Students will see demonstrations, participate in group discussions and attend presentations by officers and staff members from the various divisions.

Those interested in taking the sessions must be 21 years of age and live or work in Shelby County. Applications can be mailed by calling the Crime Prevention Office at (901) 867-1385. They are also available at the Sheriff's Office website: www.shelby-sheriff.org.
Students must pass a criminal background check to attend the sessions.
