The Safe Streets Task Force is questioning two people this morning in connection with last night’s robbery of the Subway restaurant in South Memphis. The task force is comprised of officers with the Memphis Police Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the F.B.I.
One of those suspects is thought to be the man who pointed a gun at two Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies immediately after the robbery.
Just after 8:30 last night, investigators say a man with a gun held up the Subway at 1477 Elvis Presley. A woman customer in the store witnessed the robbery and ran out of the restaurant.
Two Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division were working in the neighborhoods near the Subway attempting to apprehend fugitives. As they sat in their patrol car writing reports, the woman told them about the robbery.
The officers then drove towards the restaurant and immediately confronted the robbers’ getaway car. The car stopped and the Deputies walked towards the vehicle.
That’s when they say a man on the passenger side pointed a pistol at them. The Deputies ordered the man to drop the weapon. He refused and continued pointing the weapon at the officers.
Both Deputies then fired shots at the two people in the vehicle. The Deputies were not injured. Whether the suspect actually fired at the officers is still under investigation.
The getaway vehicle, a red Plymouth, was found moments later on Kerr Avenue at James Street near the Subway.
One of the two suspects does have a flesh wound. It has not been confirmed whether that wound resulted from the shooting.
The two Deputies involved have been relieved of duty with pay while the investigation continues.
The suspects have not been charged. The Safe Streets Task Force will release additional information about the robbery and the shooting as it becomes available.
