Last week’s regional crime-fighting and anti-terrorism effort by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office led to the capture of fugitives, other criminals and generated hundreds of traffic violations in Mid-South communities. “Operation Sudden Impact”, an initiative by the Sheriff’s Office Homeland Security Bureau, linked more than 50 law enforcement agencies for the tri-state area crime suppression initiative.
“Sudden Impact is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together. We will use this collaborative crime-fighting tactic to address other public safety issues as they arise in the Mid-South,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
“Operation Sudden Impact” involved Officers from six counties in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Simultaneous anti-crime initiatives were conducted in the various communities. The effort culminated this past Saturday night and Sunday morning. That’s when commanders from the participating agencies met at the Sheriff’s Office Homeland Security Operations Center in South Memphis to discuss crime trends and their possible link to terrorist activity.
Arrest reports, traffic violations and other crime reports from agencies involved in “Operation Sudden Impact” were logged into the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Intelligence Bureau database. Deputies then reviewed the crime information with the Tennessee Department of Homeland Security.
In preparation for “Operation Sudden Impact”, Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Homeland Security Bureau made on-site inspections at many industries. Deputies also provided terrorism training for almost 500 law enforcement officers, the security staffs at several area industries and the public.
