Children, Teenagers and Senior Citizens to Benefit from Sheriff’s Office Summer Crime Prevention Series

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit will begin conducting crime prevention courses this summer at community centers throughout Shelby County. The sessions will continue through August 5.

“I’m elated about this partnership we’ve established with the community centers. We wanted to offer these important classes to children and youth to help occupy their free time this summer. Along with that, we wanted to reach senior adults who routinely visit these centers to help keep them from being crime victims,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Deputies assigned during the school year to patrol Shelby County high schools, middle schools and Northaven Elementary School will teach the sessions. Topics include:

• Children ages 7, 8, and 9—“Junior Deputy Program” which focuses on how the juvenile justice system operates, identifying suspicious behavior from strangers, the dangers of alcohol and drugs and how to call for help in time of an emergency.

• Teenagers—“Drug and Alcohol Addiction,” “The Curfew Laws,” and other topics depending on the wishes of the class members.

• Senior Citizens—“Keeping Valuables Safe,” “Scam Artists,” “Internet Fraud” and “Common Sense-Self Defense.”
