Wanted Suspect Makes It Easy For Deputies To Arrest Him
Release Date: February 8, 2006
A man recently arrested by Deputies who was wanted on vehicle burglary and a host of other charges, ended up in jail last evening when he went with his sister to the Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Impound Lot.
Just after 5:00 p.m. yesterday, Jermaris Brown, 20, of Memphis, was with his sister as she attempted to get her car from the Sheriff’s Impound lot on Dovecrest in East Memphis.
The car had been impounded after Deputies say Brown used it recently when he broke into a vehicle and stole a purse at a South-East Shelby County restaurant.
Investigators say Brown was driving his sister’s black Chevy Camaro when he was arrested by Deputies on January 28th. That morning, undercover officers watched Brown break into a car at the Cracker Barrel restaurant on Lowrance Road at Hacks Cross Road in South-East Shelby County.
There had been 12 vehicle break-ins at the restaurant during the past couple of months. Brown had been seen driving the black Camaro near the restaurant parking lot at the time of the crimes.
After watching Brown break into the car at the restaurant, Deputies moved in to take him into custody. However, Brown jumped into the Camaro and sped away, crashing the car a few blocks later. He was not injured in the crash.
Within hours of his arrest on January 28, Brown was released from jail after paying the required $1,000 for his $10,000 bond.
He missed his court date last Friday and became a fugitive for those charges and other crimes he allegedly committed last year.
Brown now again faces those charges and another one.
When arrested yesterday, Deputies found marijuana in his pants pocket.
When Deputies asked Brown why he risked being caught with his sister and having marijuana in his pockets, he replied to officers, “That’s just what I do.”
Brown remains in the Shelby County Jail. His bond on all of the charges has not been set.
