Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to Host Regional S.W.A.T. Team Competition

Release Date: September 5, 2003

More than 100 law enforcement officers will be gathering in Memphis next week to test their tactical skills in the 6th Annual Southeast Regional S.W.A.T. Team Competition that will be hosted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

The Teams will be competing for awards by repelling from buildings, tactical shooting scenarios, officer/victim rescues and obstacle course events. The competition will test the skills of S.W.A.T. teams from various police departments and federal agencies in the Mid-South.

“The goal of the competition is more than to promote friendly competition among departments. Training must be on-going to ensure no one is hurt during critical incidents,” said Patrolman Jason Pagenkopf, Coordinator of the competition.

The competition begins Monday, September 8, 2003 at 7:30 a.m. at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Training Center at 983 Dovecrest (formerly the Metro Aviation hanger). For information about the daily events, contact Lt. Dale Lane at 508-5358. He will be helping coordinate photo opportunities and arrange for interviews.
