Deputies to Be Honored This Week at Sheriff’s Office “Symbols of Excellence” Ceremony

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be honoring deputies this week who have shown outstanding bravery, courage and commitment to law enforcement.

Thirty-four (34) “Symbols of Excellence” awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m., this Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Sheriff’s Office Training Academy at 993 Dovecrest. Here is a listing of the awards to be presented:

“The Purple Star,” presented when an officer is killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This medal will be given to the family of Deputy George Selby who was killed in December of 2002 while serving a narcotics warrant.

The “Medal of Valor” will be given to three deputies for heroism.

The “Lifesaving Medal” will be presented to five deputies.

The “Meritorious Service Medal” will be given to 24 deputies for outstanding service.

The “Medal of Merit” will honor a deputy’s resourcefulness who has exhibited exceptional ability and accomplishment.

Sheriff Luttrell and other members of the command staff will make remarks. The keynote address will be given by Michael Heidingsfield, President and CEO of the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission.

“At this special occasion, we take time to pay tribute to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. These officers have exhibited acts of bravery and heroism. Their sacrifice is an inspiration to all of us who serve at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
