Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say a teenager who was issued his Driver’s License less than a week ago was speeding when he crashed into an elderly couple’s vehicle this afternoon in Arlington. The crash injured five people, two seriously.
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Investigators say just before 2:30 the16-year-old boy was driving a 1991 Toyota pickup truck west on Pleasant Ridge Road. As the truck rounded a curve just east of Donnell Road, it hit another pickup truck, a 1988 Chevrolet 1500, driven by a Grover Acree, 79, of Arlington.
Investigators say the teenager’s truck was going at a high rate of speed when it veered into the path of the Acree’s truck. Acree was taken to Baptist Hospital of Memphis in stable condition. His wife, Ruby, was taken to The Regional Medical Center by helicopter in serious condition.
The teenaged driver also had critical injuries. He and his two passengers, a17 year-old boy and a 16 year-old girl, were taken by ambulance to The Regional Medical Center. Paramedics had originally planned to take the teenagers to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center as mentioned in an earlier news release about the crash.
Deputies say none of the teenagers was wearing a seatbelt. The Acrees both had on their seatbelts.
The 16 year-old has been charged with Violation of the Graduated Driver’s License law by having too many passengers in his vehicle. The teenager was also charged with Violation of the Seatbelt Law and Not Exercising Due Care.
