Charges placed in Cordova shootout

Release Date: January 23, 2003

Billy JacksonShelby County Sheriff’s Detectives have now charged a 19-year-old man with shooting a Memphis man four times at his Cordova home yesterday. Investigators say Billy Jackson of Memphis has been charged with attempted First Degree Murder and theft of property over $500.00. Detectives say the car Jackson was driving was a stolen rental car.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department says the victim in the shooting, 41-year-old Jeff Droke, was shot four times in the front yard of his home in the 8900 block of Timber Trail Cove. Detectives say Droke told them he saw Jackson in the front yard of his home. As he left the house, he picked up his gun. After confronting Jackson, detectives say Droke was shot. Droke was then able to return fire as Jackson drove away from his house.

Billy Jackson’s bond has been set at $50,000 dollars.

Sheriff’s Office detectives say they’re still trying to find out details about what led to the shooting. They believe the victim was recently trying to intervene in a family dispute. Detectives say their investigation is continuing and more arrests may be forthcoming in connection with the case.
