Sheriff’s Deputies, Police Officers, Firefighters and Emergency Services workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty were honored today at the Fourth Annual “Fallen Heroes Memorial Service” at Memorial Park Cemetery in East Memphis.

“We thank the staff at Memorial Park Cemetery for their kindness. This yearly tribute helps us to never forget those who have died while protecting our community from crime, fires, and other dangers,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Sheriff Luttrell, Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, United States Congressman Steve Cohen and other area dignitaries spoke about the sacrifices of those who have been killed in the line of duty.

“We appreciate the opportunity to host this yearly tribute. It is important we pause and give recognition to those who have given their lives protecting and serving our community. Memorial Park employees are proud to honor these dedicated servants at our ‘Fallen Heroes’ memorial at the cemetery,” said Dennis Hamilton, General Manager of Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.

The “Fallen Heroes” memorial marker lists the names of public safety employees in Shelby County and neighboring communities who have died in the line of duty, some more than a century ago.

Jeffrey Jeans, a Desoto County Mississippi Emergency Medical Technician and Volunteer Firefighter, was honored today and his name was added to the memorial marker. While on duty last year, Jeans collapsed from a heat stroke on May 11 while loading equipment at a fire hall in Eudora, Mississippi.

The names of each “fallen hero” on the memorial were read aloud. Musical selections from singers and bagpipe musicians were also part of the program.

An Honor Guard comprised of law enforcement officers and firefighters provided the backdrop for an impressive “Placing of the Wreath” tribute. The wreath was passed from one chief to another to represent law enforcement Officers, firefighters and emergency medical workers who have died in the line of duty.
