Undercover Beer Sting Results In Violations At South-East Memphis Area Businesses

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad visited businesses in South-East Memphis last Friday night. Clerks at half of the locations visited sold alcohol to persons below the legal drinking age of 21.

On Friday evening, January 20, 2006, Deputies and other officers visited 24 locations which included convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores along Lamar, Winchester and other nearby streets. Clerks at 12 businesses sold beer to minors.

Those who sold alcohol to underage customers received misdemeanor citations and will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.

The sting last Friday night was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.

This was the first beer sting conducted by Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers on the Metro D.U.I. Squad in 2006. More undercover stings will be conducted throughout the year.
