Release Date: June 27, 2003

Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office say a group of teenagers on the way to an out-of-town track meet escaped with minor injuries today after the van they were riding in ran off Holmes Road near Sweeney. The accident happened shortly after 11 this morning.

The driver of the 2000 white Dodge passenger van said as he approached the intersection, a car veered into his lane of traffic. The driver swerved to miss the vehicle and the van flipped over.

There were 15 people in the van. Ten teenagers were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. Investigators say the driver and passengers were wearing seatbelts. Deputies also report the van’s driver had a valid chauffeur’s license and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. As a result no charges will be filed.
