Sheriff's Crime Statistics Meeting Leads To Joint Task Force of Sheriff's Deputies and Germantown Police Detectives To Solve Vehicle Break-ins

Release Date: February 17, 2005

Suspect TruckDetectives with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Germantown Police Department have initiated a task force to help solve a rash of vehicle vandalisms that occurred last week at hotel parking lots in the Germantown area.

The task force was formed within minutes of the monthly “Compstat” (Computer Statistics Crime Information) meeting hosted today by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office invites representatives of law enforcement agencies in and near Shelby County to hear about crime trends and the tactics Sheriff's Deputies and their command staff are using to fight crime.

This morning, Germantown Police Detectives who were present at the meeting shared information with Sheriff's Detectives about the recent hotel parking lot vandalisms. Twelve (12) vehicles were broken into recently at hotels near the intersection of Germantown Road and Wolf River Boulevard.

The break-ins occurred during the early morning hours last Thursday morning. No vehicles were taken. But, several unsuspecting hotel customers found their luggage and other personal items stolen from their vehicles. In some instances, checkbooks, tools and other personal items had been taken.

“Crime is seamless. Criminals move about Shelby County without respect to city limit boundaries. The task force formed at our crime statistics meeting will also assist our Deputies who are investigating similar crimes near the Germantown area,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

“This clearly shows the importance of our officers sharing information with Sheriff's Deputies. We have an excellent partnership with Sheriff Luttrell's staff and are confident this type of inter-agency communication will help make our community safer,” said Chief Richard Hall of the Germantown Police Department.

Task force investigators are looking for the driver of a black 2003 or 2004 Ford F-150 pick-up truck who may be responsible for the crimes.

The vehicle has a distinguishing feature, a huge Harley Davidson eagle decal on the back window. Witnesses reported seeing the truck in the area at the time of the vandalisms. It appeared to be driven by a white man. However, no one was able to get the license tag number.

Anyone with information about the vehicle break-ins should call Detective Matt Fisher with the Germantown Police Department at (901) 757-7320 or Inspector Bill Allen with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Detective Division at (901) 545-5600.
