Deputies Capture Hacks Cross Area Vehicle Burglar “In the Act”

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man this past weekend who they believe is responsible for several vehicle burglaries in the South-East Shelby County area recently.

Sheriff’s Deputies had noted a trend developing at businesses in the Hack Cross Road area near Lowrance Road. From the first of December 2005 through January 12 vehicles had been broken into at the parking lots.

Working with the Cracker Barrel restaurant’s management team, Sheriff Deputies set up additional patrols in the Hacks Cross Road area using undercover officers to watch the parking lots.

This past Saturday morning (January 28), Deputies were in undercover vehicles at the Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Just after nine o’clock, they saw a man wearing a camouflage jacket drive a black Camaro onto the lot. The car had been seen at the time of some of the vehicle break-ins.

Deputies watched as the man drove to the back parking area. He got out of his car and broke into a car door of a white Chevy Impala. He then pulled the trunk release and took a purse from the trunk.

When officers moved in, the man got back into his car and sped away. While pursuing the vehicle just a few blocks on Hacks Cross Road, Deputies saw the man throw several items out of his car window that had been taken in the burglary.

As the suspect’s car approached Misty Meadows Lane, he lost control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole. He was not injured in the crash.

Deputies took Jermaris Brown, 20, of Memphis, into custody. He faces four charges including:

• Burglary of a Motor Vehicle
• Evading Arrest
• Driving with a Suspended/Revoked/Cancelled License
• Reckless Driving

Brown made a $10,000 bond and was released from the Shelby County Jail on the day he was arrested.

Deputies say their investigation is continuing.
