Sheriff’s Volunteer Dedicated Himself to Serve Others

James Reid, 75, of Germantown, known by “Jim” to Sheriff’s Deputies and others at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, passed away last evening (July 27) at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis.

“Jim was highly respected by all of us at the Sheriff’s Office.  We are grateful he shared his talents with both our employees and citizens throughout the community.  All of us will miss his ever-present smile and kindness to others,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Mr. Reid began as a volunteer at the Sheriff’s Office in 1992 as a Reserve Deputy and photographer for the department taking pictures at ceremonies and community events.

He served as a Reserve Deputy until 1997 and then joined the “Special Services Squad.”  Squad volunteers check daily on the welfare of elderly, disabled and home-bound residents in Memphis and Shelby County.

“We could always count on Jim.  He gave hours and hours of his time to assist senior citizens.  Those of us who served along side of Jim mourn his passing,” said Joyce Studard, Coordinator of the Special Services Squad.

Mr. Reid was a former reporter and photographer at the Memphis Press Scimitar from 1953 through 1983. Before that, he was in the United States Navy and served as a Special Investigator and Aerial Photographer.

Before joining the Sheriff’s Office in 1992, Mr. Reid worked for many years as a reserve officer with the Memphis Police Department.

Jim Reid was married and the father of four daughters.  Today (July 28) would have been his 76th birthday.

Visitation will be held tomorrow, July 29, 2006, at Highpoint Funeral Home at 3788 Summer Avenue in Memphis from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with the funeral immediately following visitation.

Burial will be at Memory Hill Gardens at 3700 North Germantown Road.
