Weekend Beer Sting Nets Violations
Release Date: August 1, 2005
Officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad went undercover this past Saturday evening (July 30) and found clerks at 15 businesses in Memphis selling alcohol to persons under the legal drinking age of 21. Officers also found race fans at the Memphis Motor Sports Park violating the alcohol laws.
Deputies and other officers visited 35 convenience stores, grocery stores, drug stores and liquor stores along Getwell Road, Park Avenue, Highland Street and Summer Avenue areas in Memphis.
Clerks at 15 of those businesses sold beer to customers below 21 years of age. Those clerks were given misdemeanor citations and will have to report to the Shelby County Jail to be booked and fingerprinted. One teenaged clerk was also cited. The clerk, who is 17, sold beer to a customer.
Also on Saturday evening, D.U.I. Officers visited the Memphis Motor Sports to investigate reports of minors using alcohol while watching the races. Officers mingled in the grandstands and issued several citations.
Nine people under the age of 21 were issued citations for possessing beer. One adult was arrested for providing alcohol to a minor. Two other juveniles were issued a summons for possessing beer. One other juvenile, who lives in another state, was arrested for possessing beer.
It is important to note that NO violations were issued to any race track vendor. Those issued citations were already in possession of the alcohol when observed by officers.
