Deputies from various Sheriff’s Office bureaus combined forces this past weekend to address crime in the Nutbush area near Jackson Avenue. Deputies from the Metro DUI Squad, Street Crimes, Narcotics and Reserve Bureaus were involved in the enforcement effort that lasted for several hours.

The multi-bureau operation began Friday afternoon when deputies with the Street Crimes and Narcotics Bureaus fanned out across the area near Summer Avenue and Waring. Deputies had received information about drug dealing and gang crime possibly linked to crimes in other parts of Shelby County.

Coinciding with the undercover effort, the Metro DUI Squad, comprised of officers with the Sheriff’s Office and Germantown Police Department, patrolled the Nutbush area to watch for those who might be driving while impaired by alcohol and other drugs, speeding, driving recklessly or not using seatbelts.

By late Friday night, Deputies had written more than 150 traffic violations and arrested 30 people, four arrests being for felony charges. Deputies also confiscated marijuana, cocaine and illegal prescription pills during the enforcement initiative.

Last Friday’s enforcement initiative was primarily funded by a grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. The office gives money to police agencies across the state to conduct additional traffic enforcement initiatives to spot impaired drivers and juveniles who may possess alcohol.
