Young Girl Recovering From Fire Injuries This Past Weekend

Release Date: January 17, 2006

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies say an eight year old girl is recovering from burns after a fire at her home this past Sunday morning.

Deputies say Tatum Proby, 8, who lives in the 4300 block of Beaver Creek in South-East Shelby County, was transferred yesterday to the Shriner Hospital in Houston, Texas from the Regional Medical Center.

About 11:00 this past Sunday morning, the little girl was severely burned after her bedclothes caught fire.

Deputies are still investigating the circumstances of how the girl managed to get burned on her back and legs.

Investigators say she was playing in an upstairs family room and they believe she got too close to a lit candle in the room.

At the time of the little girl’s injury, her grandmother was at home, but in another part of the house. The grandmother ran to the little girl’s aid. Wilma Clayton, 60, who lives at the home, was also burned as she tried to put out the flames on the little girl’s bedclothes.

Ms. Clayton was treated and released from the Regional Medical Center. The house was not severely damaged by the fire.
