Cause of Death: Multiple Pistol Wounds to the mouth, chest, hip and hand
Shot during a raid of a gambling joint. Also shot during the raid was Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. McDermott, who succumbed the next day. 40-50 gamblers were arrested in the raid. These 2 line of duty deaths are the oldest recorded for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Sheriff Houston Mitchell's death bears significance in that he was the first “African American” to die in the line of duty for S.C.S.O.
