Explorer Academy

The purpose of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Explorer Program is to provide the Explorer first-hand knowledge of a Deputy Sheriff's duties as well as a broader knowledge of basic police procedures. Explorers also learn through observation and conversation with Deputy Sheriff's, during their performance on their tour-of-duty in certain divisions of the Sheriff's Office. The Explorer, upon completion of this program, will have a well-rounded idea of police work and a working knowledge of reports and procedures. Another purpose is to promote mutual respect between the youth and the criminal justice system.

To become a SCSO Explorer students must complete the following:

  1. Submit an application online by clicking the link below
  2. Attend Applicant Processing at SCSO Training Academy (dates are tentative)
    • Letters will be mailed to applicants in March
    • Applicant Agility Test / April
    • Applicant Interviews / April
    • Applicant Orientation #1 / April
    • Applicant Orientation #2 / May
    • Pay non-refundable $25 fee & order Recruit Uniform
    • Attendance is MANDATORY to be eligible for Explorer Recruit Academy
  3. Explorer Basic Recruit Class at SCSO Training Academy (dates are tentative)
    • Class begins end of May
    • Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat / 8 am - 4:30 pm
    • Recruits may only have three (3) absences
    • Graduation July
  4. Upon graduation students and parents attend meetings that are scheduled twice a month and work various events that include Sheriff's Office and community service assignments as well as program fundraisers. Continued participation is based on the students' attendance at meetings, obtaining required monthly hours, grades in school, and conduct. Residency is NOT an issue as long as the studen is on time for ALL activities.
  5. Renewal fees are $25 per person.
