Duties & Ethical Responsibilities
The Sheriff is constitutionally bound to provide law enforcement for unincorporated Shelby County, staff the jail, and provide courtroom security and carries out orders of the court.
SCSO has several policies that define the code of conduct and discourages unethical behavior. We have issued a new policy requiring a deputy to intervene to stop another deputy from conducting an act that is unethical, or that violates law or policy such as excessive force, theft, falsifying documents, or inappropriate behavior. Deputies are required to report unethical behavior to a ranking supervisor.
Deputies are required to complete a comprehensive report when force is used. This report is reviewed by multiple levels of supervision for compliance. The report is subsequently entered into an early warning system that helps identify potential issues.
