Reserve Levels
In order to meet the growing diversity of volunteer needs, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office now offers two levels of Reserve Deputy.

Level 2 Reserve Deputies
Level 2 Reserve Deputies complete at least 400 hours of training, plus 40 hours of yearly in-service training, and must serve 24 hours per month. They may work in special events or in Uniform Patrol, but must work with a full-time officer or Level 1 Reserve Deputy. Level 2 Reserve Deputies receive an option for health insurance, as well as an annual $250 uniform allotment. Level 2 Reserve Deputies do not have opportunity to earn rank. They do, however, receive firearms training and carry a firearm. Although their uniform is the same green pants and khaki shirt as a full-time deputy, their badge distinguishes them as a Reserve Deputy.
Level 1 Reserve Deputies
Level 1 Reserve Deputies complete at least 600-700 hours of training, plus 40 hours of yearly in-service training, and must serve 24 hours per month. These deputies are fully-commissioned law enforcement officers. They receive an option for health insurance, as well as an annual $250 uniform allotment. Level 1 Reserve Deputies follow a similar ranking system as full-time deputies, and have the ability to earn rank. Level 1 Reserve Deputies may work in Uniform Patrol, Traffic, Fugitive, Training Academy, Urban Park Patrol (UPP), Special Response Unit (SRU) and Special Events Unit (SEU). They also have opportunity for specialized training such as one-man certification, field training officer, crisis intervention, and more. Level 1 Reserve Deputies receive firearms training and carry a firearm. Their uniform and badge are the same as full-time deputies.
