Shelby County is Tennessee’s largest county both in terms of population and geographic area, with a population of 927,644. The county area covers 784 square miles. The county seat is Memphis. The county has seven incorporated cities.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s office is the largest Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee. The Law Enforcement Division is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is one of two organizations in the country that has received the Triple Crown Award from the National Sheriff’s Association and the Tri-Arc Award from CALEA.
The Uniform Patrol Division is home to some of the nation’s finest law enforcement professionals who provide primary law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of Shelby County as well as Lakeland and Arlington. A variety of enforcement strategies are used to improve the quality of life for our citizens. Crime statistics and trends are monitored daily to identify “hot spots” and develop crime forecast to deploy our resources efficiently.
